We offer six comprehensive modules that will give you the skills, knowledge, values and attitudes that you need to lay the foundations for long term success as a professional actor. You will work with experienced, high-profile directors and showcase your talent to leading industry professionals.

STRUCTURE

The Diploma course consists of three twelve-week modules over one year. Students must choose one module per term (subject to the availability of places). The qualification is awarded after the completion of any three modules.

The Advanced Diploma builds on the first year with an additional three twelve-week modules in the (optional) second year of training. Each module is delivered over twelve hours of class time per week.

COURSE CONTENT - TERM ONE (choose one module per term)

DEVISED THEATRE PERFORMANCE

This module is about devising work for performance as part of an ensemble. Students will examine ways of responding to a brief or to a stimulus and developing ideas into a performance piece. Students will be encouraged to use performance and acting skills acquired during rehearsals and to apply them to the context of producing group-created original work. A one-act play created by the group will be performed to a public audience in Week 12.

ACTING METHODOLOGIES

This module is about the process and skill of acting. In this unit learners will develop the technical and interpretative skills necessary to work as an actor. It will enable learners to use exercises and techniques that can be applied in a range of vocational contexts as an actor. It will also provide the opportunity to learn and experience a broad variety of acting styles which may include: Stanislavski; Meisner Technique; Michael Chekhov Technique; Practical Aesthetics; Morris Technique and Viewpoints. A performance of scene work for a public audience will be presented in Week 12.

COURSE CONTENT - TERM TWO (choose one module per term)

CONTEMPORARY THEATRE PERFORMANCE

This module is about the application of acting techniques to contemporary theatre texts. Students will be able to adapt and develop their acting skills using styles appropriate for plays written post 1950. A one-act contemporary play will be performed to a public audience in Week 12.

SCREEN PERFORMANCE AND SHOWREEL

This module develops the skills required to act to camera. Learners will be introduced to the particular requirements of performing in a film and television context and the skills requirements of performing to camera. Scenes from Australian and international television and film scripts will be used in rehearsal and performance. Learners will be familiarised with the procedures and conditions of studio and location work, basic production techniques and health and safety aspects. Learners will be encouraged to read, view and listen to a broad range of texts, screenplays and television and film performances for analysis of genre, approaches to acting and audience demands. A showreel performance will be filmed by a professional director at the conclusion of the module. (additional charges for showreel filming and editing apply).

COURSE CONTENT - TERM THREE (choose one module per term)

CLASSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE

This module is about acting in a classical theatre performance. Students will develop particular acting skills as they apply to classical texts. They will be designated a role within the performance company based on an audition, and on their work in the preceding units. This unit takes place within the context of a performance company that simulates the working environment and conditions of a professional performance company. A full-length classical play (usually Shakespeare) will be performed to a public audience and industry guests in Week 12.

INDUSTRY SHOWCASE

Students will rehearse and perform selected scenes for an invited audience of industry professionals including: agents; casting directors; directors; producers and fellow performers in Week 12. The objective is to showcase students' work and give each graduate the best opportunity to gain representation with a reputable agent. Scenes will be carefully selected according to the type; skills and preferred genre of each performer. Each student will be included in a high quality program featuring headshots and CVs along with a DVD showreel (for those who have completed the screen performance module). Advice and guidance regarding auditions; casting processes and the business of being a professional actor will be covered during the term. The showcase will be held both during the day and in the evening to give industry professionals every opportunity to attend. Champagne and canapes will be served to guests after the performance.
