Every graduate of the Advanced Diploma program will be offered a place on the books of our affiliated actor’s agency Sydney Creative Management (subject to meeting registration criteria and satisfactory on-going performance).
Community Of Committed Artists
Sydney Theatre School’s collaborative environment fosters a tight knit community of acting alumni and industry professionals. Through training and performance, students exercise both individual and collective creativity whilst building important industry connections that stay with them throughout their future careers.
Unlike some acting and drama schools in Sydney, our students regularly perform in full-length productions (not just short scenes or excerpts from plays) in front of paying audiences in our own on-campus performance space.

All productions are directed by industry professionals with many years of experience (see teachers’ bio page for full details) who also regularly work for major independent and professional theatre companies in Sydney and around the country.

Interview
After the audition, selected applicants will called for a brief phone interview. Here, you will have the opportunity to talk us through your commitment to a career in the performing arts industry and ask any questions you may have about the course.

Video Audition
Auditions are conducted at the school in Sydney, Australia. If you’re not able or don't wish to attend in person for the audition you may submit an audition by video (via MP4 file; Youtube or VIMEO etc). Simply email us a link to the video (including your monologue and a brief chat to camera about yourself) via info@sydneytheatreschool.com when completed.
MEET YOUR TRAINERS
Mark Matthews - Managing Director
As a graduate of the University of Western Sydney with Bachelor of Arts (Theatre), Graduate Diploma of Education (Drama) and Master of Arts (Directing) degrees to his name, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge, dedication and passion for the arts to Sydney Theatre School. Mark’s extensive experience in acting, directing, teaching and production roles, ranging from Artistic Director and Director through to General Manager, sees him bring a hands-on approach and deep understanding of actor-training to his role as Sydney Theatre School’s Head of School.  He has performed as an actor in many theatre productions, television shows and TV commercials. He has also directed over thirty theatre productions at venues such as the Stables Theatre; Pilgrim Theatre; King Street Theatre; Seymour Centre; Sidetrack Theatre; Parade Studio, NIDA; Figtree Theatre and others. His other notable roles include Artistic Director of the Pilgrim Theatre in Sydney from 1995-1998; Affiliate Director with the Sydney Theatre Company; and General Manager of Sydney Art Theatre in 1998; Co-Director of City Drama Studio Pty Ltd. from 1998-2001; Head of Drama and drama teacher at several Sydney private schools; Lecturer in Drama at Uxbridge College, London in 2002-2003; and Director of the actors’ agency, Sydney Creative Management, from 2006-present. Mark’s reputation in the industry earned him a place on the panel of industry judges for the Most Outstanding Actor at the 2011 TV Week Logie Awards. 
Leah Pellinkhof – Acting Teacher & Director
Leah is a graduate of the NIDA M.A. (Writing for Performance) program in 2015 and the AFTRS directing program in 2016. She has worked as a performer, writer, director and producer on numerous stage and screen productions but her true passion lies in the classroom where she is an inspiring, engaging, and nurturing teacher. She started her career in the entertainment industry as an actor, appearing in various short & feature films, TV commercials and stage productions . Although she received much kudos as a performer, Leah decided to take a step out of the spotlight to go behind the scenes. Her work as a director has ranged over Shakespeare, musicals, stand-up comedy, feature films, music videos and her own original productions. Her writing and directing talents have scored her many accolades. The Works of William Shakespeare (BY CHICKS) was acknowledges with a Dell’Arte award for best play, The Matilda award nominated My Pet Human also scored her a Dell’Arte Award for favourite playwright. Her short film Chook and Maureen which she wrote produced and performed in won the Tropical Alternative Film Festival and many of her shows have received rave reviews, sell out seasons and audience acclaim.
Malcolm Frawley – Improvisation & Director
Malcolm is a writer/director/teacher/actor with over 35 years of professional experience after graduating from the Independent Theatre School. His plays and productions have been performed extensively throughout Australia. He spent some years writing, and script editing, for TV shows that included Neighbours and E Street. Malcolm has taught at Excelsia College, Screenwise, Theatre Nepean (Uni of Western Sydney), A.C.T.T., Screen Actors Workshop and was co-director of NIDA’s screen acting programme for Third Years from 2000-2003 (inclusive). He has been teaching at Sydney Theatre School since 2007.
Serhat Caradee – Acting
An award winning Australian filmmaker, Serhat’s films have screened at over 50 local and international film festivals, winning numerous prizes and awards. He wrote, directed and co-produced the feature film ‘Cedar Boys’, which won the Audience Award at 56th Sydney International Film Festival, screened at 5 international film festivals and garnered many nominations and accolades in Australia, including AFI (AACTA), AWG, ADG and IF. He is currently working on numerous projects all in various stages of development through his company Bonafide Pictures with support from Screen NSW, Screen Australia and other production companies. Serhat is also a Directing Graduate from AFTRS and comes from an extensive background in theatre, drama and performing arts studies. As an actor he has performed with the following theatre companies – Shakespeare by the Sea, New Theatre, Genesian Theatre and The Pilgrim Theatre. On TV in the second series of the award winning ‘East-West 101’, in the 2015 SBS TV series ‘The Principal’ and recently in the 2016 U.S Sci-Fi series ‘Hunters’, produced by Gale Anne Hurd (‘Terminator’ 1 & 2) and created by Natalie Chaidez (‘Heroes’).

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Q: What does the audition involve?
A: The audition starts with a brief group warm up. Following this, you will deliver your monologue in front of the panel and other auditionees. 

After the audition, you will be interviewed by phone or in person in order to find out more about your background, experience and career ambitions and to answer any questions you may have about the program.
Q: Do you have an open day or information session?
A: No. Prospective auditionees/students are welcome to contact us (via email or phone) to arrange a personal inspection of the school and meet with the staff and students at any mutually agreeable time. 

Weekdays during business hours or Saturday mornings are preferred for meetings but other times may be arranged if this is not suitable. 


Q: Will I get an agent and acting work at the end of the Diploma course?
A: Many graduates have secured representation at the end of the course and some do so in the months and years after graduation. It depends on how hard you work and how persistent you are. 

If you work hard and listen to the advice you are given during your time with us and continue gathering training and experience after graduation it is likely that you’ll secure representation sooner or later. 

All graduates of the Advanced Diploma program are guaranteed a place with our affiliated actors’ agency Sydney Creative Management 
Q: Do I have enough experience or talent to gain entry to the program?
A: The main pre-requisites for acceptance onto the Diploma of Theatre & Screen (Acting) program are: the ability to perform a short monologue; a positive attitude; a strong level of commitment and the determination required to pursue a professional acting career.

Experience in high school drama, amateur theatre or a short beginner’s acting course is usually sufficient. The program is also suitable for those with more experience who want to hone their skills and showcase their work to the industry in high-quality productions directed by working industry professionals.
Q: What is the age range and background of students?
A: The ages of students accepted into the program in the past has ranged from seventeen to early fifties. The bulk of students are in their late teens and early twenties and there is always a good balance of youth and maturity.

All students will have demonstrated the required skills, attitude and commitment required to successfully complete the programme requirements and embark on an acting career on completion of the program.
Q: Is it possible to get CENTRELINK or AUSTUDY assistance for any of your courses?
A: The Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Theatre and Screen (Acting) courses DO NOT qualify students for VSL, AUSTUDY or YOUTH ALLOWANCE payments. 

We do have an easy monthly payment plan and access to private personal loans through MacCredit (see below).
FEES for 2020 Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses
Upon acceptance of offer, a deposit of $1,100 inc. GST is payable.
Monthly payments of $990 per month x 10 months inc. GST (via direct debit or credit card payment).
